El Rancho, Waikanae played host once again to our long running Peer Support Camp to kick off the school year for the new Year 9's and their Year 13 peer supporters.

Celebrating Academic Success
A special assembly was dedicated to fete our top academic achievers in Year 13. The students pictured all achieved their 2022 NCEA Level 2 certificates endorsed with Excellence. This was our largest group yet to reach this milestone in a calendar year. Ka mau te wehi!
Wellington Model UN
On March 25 and 26, 200 students from various high schools in the Wellington region participated in the Wellington Model UN (WMUN). Many students from Newlands College took part in the event, and they not only had the chance to participate in thought-provoking discussions and negotiations through their assigned country's perspectives while honing their communication and critical thinking skills, but also forged rare friendships and gained a deeper understanding of international relations, global issues, and maintaining peace in conflicts. It was truly inspiring to see our future leaders in action: an enlightening experience.

1SCA Hāngī
In a 'groundbreaking' experiment the students investigated the carbon cycle through a hāngī. Armed with shovels, curiosity, and a dash of culinary courage, our budding scientists put in the mahi to put down a hangi. In the end they were rewarded with some tasty kai!
Year 11 Melodrama
Every year the Level 1 Drama students delight their families and friends with the Melodrama performances. The typical story line of Hero saving the Heroine and defeating the Villain with a comic sidekick and the idea of Good triumphing over Evil takes to the Hall stage for some interactive fun and strong character acting.
Video Essay Competition
Year 11 English/Media students expressed their views on a variety of topics as part of the innaugural Newlands video essay competition. Naomi Tull's pilosophical conundrum, The Trolley Problem emerged as the first place winner, but a playlist of the top 3 video essays can be found here.
Dragonboating
Term 1's Dragonboating regatta proved a successful one for our intrepid paddlers. After qualifying for the final, Newlands College teams took out first and second place. Photos here
